First Road Trip

Embarking on a consulting business venture is like scaling a towering mountain for the first time. Each step forward is met with unforeseen obstacles and the constant threat of setbacks. Yet, it's also filled with awe-inspiring views and the indescribable thrill of conquering new heights.

The Journey Begins

The journey started with a significant milestone as I was en route to an inaugural speaking engagement, representing Carmona Strategies for the first time at the Idaho Parks and Recreation Association Conference in Lewiston, Idaho. However, the logistics of attending posed a formidable challenge. To minimize time away from my family and work, I chose the last flight out, scheduled to land at midnight. This decision encapsulated the perpetual balancing act of personal and professional commitments that many entrepreneurs grapple with.

Upon arriving in Spokane, my accommodations reflected the early-stage financial prudence that most start-ups have to exercise: I stayed at the cheapest hotel. As the clock hit 1:30 a.m., I finally signed out of the presentations our Carmona Strategies team had worked so hard to create. The lack of hot water the following day served as a chilly reminder of start-up life but a great reminder of what is most important.

Embracing the Grind

The drive to Lewiston the following day was a two-hour drive each way from Spokane with beautiful rolling green hills, small towns, and flowing rivers. The moments on the road were filled with conference calls and brief moments for reflection on Carmona Strategies' journey and the uncertain road ahead. Despite the physical exhaustion, there was an undercurrent of exhilaration—a sense that every mile traversed was a step towards realizing our vision.

The conference was a whirlwind of inspiration, connection, and knowledge exchange. Addressing a room full of professionals, sharing insights, and hearing their stories reaffirmed my decision to embark on this journey. The potential to influence their work and, by extension, their communities was a privilege far outweighed the logistical challenges that preceded it.

The Return

After the conference, the journey back mirrored the trek to Lewiston—a long drive followed by a 6 a.m. flight out the next morning, all to return to my responsibilities without skipping a beat. This whirlwind trip was a microcosm of the start-up experience: exhilarating, exhausting, and immensely rewarding.

Lessons Learned and Looking Forward

Reflecting on this chapter of Carmona Strategies' journey, a few key lessons stand out.

  • Never underestimate the power of passion. Passion fuels the perseverance needed to push through challenges, sustain motivation, and overcome obstacles

  • Every sacrifice and challenge is an opportunity for growth. Sacrifices, whether time, resources, or comfort, often lead to deeper insights and new skills.

  • The value of community—the connections made and the potential to impact others—is immeasurable. A community's true power lies in its ability to unite people around common goals and values, amplifying the potential to drive positive change. Whether through mentorship, shared resources, or simply being there for one another, the ripple effect of a strong, engaged community is limitless.

Would I go through it all again? Without a moment's hesitation...
