A Humbling Honor: Reflections on Being Named a Fellow in the American Academy of Parks and Recreation Administration

Some moments stand out, causing us to pause and reflect on our journey and those who have influenced us. Recently, I experienced one of these moments when I was named a Fellow in the American Academy of Parks and Recreation Administration in Atlanta. This recognition among a group of professionals dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in communities across the country is an honor I can't fully express in words.

The role of Parks and Recreation in our communities is more vital than ever. These programs and services connect people, promote wellness, and bring beauty and joy to our neighborhoods. They foster a sense of belonging and provide opportunities for individuals of all ages to explore, recreate, and connect with nature and each other. Parks and Recreation professionals serve as stewards of these invaluable spaces, helping communities thrive by providing accessible and welcoming places for play, relaxation, and community gatherings. To be recognized by an organization that champions these goals is incredibly meaningful to me.

Reflecting on my career and the moments that have led me here, I am profoundly grateful for the mentors and colleagues who took chances on me, provided guidance, and led by example. Their trust, patience, and support have enabled me to grow in ways I never imagined. They showed me the transformative impact of Parks and Recreation, and I am honored to be part of a field with such compassionate and forward-thinking leaders.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the unwavering support of my family and team. Their encouragement, patience, and love keep me grounded and remind me why I do what I do. They are my inspiration and my foundation. I am deeply grateful to the Oro Valley, Wickenburg, Gilbert, and Carmona Strategies team members for your dedication, energy, and belief in our mission. Together, we can continue to advocate for the importance of Parks and Recreation and serve our communities with integrity and purpose.

Being named a Fellow reminds me of how much more there is to do and how deeply connected we all are in this shared purpose. I look forward to the journey ahead, humbled and inspired to continue serving our communities and building a legacy for future generations. Thank you to the Academy, my mentors, colleagues, family, and team—this honor is as much yours as it is mine.
